Vintage Brand Profile: Tori Richard

After a long hiatus I am glad to finally post again! I am currently taking some designing and pattern-making classes and I intend to make some vintage dresses someday soon (wish me lots of luck!). So now, aside from filling up and selling some finds on my little Facebook store, I intend to devote some spare time brushing up on my brand knowledge, especially when it comes to vintage clothing.

My aunt Carmela recently gifted me with these Tori Richard vintage Hawaiian shirts in printed blue polyester and since my boyfriend cannot stand anything else other than his beloved cotton shirts and Batik tops, I had to store them for future use. I didn’t really know I was in fact storing up some vintage gems! So yes, thank God for Google yet again! 🙂

Here’s a background of the Tori Richard brand from my go-to site, the Vintage Fashion Guild.

Tori Richard was founded in 1956 and is still a major Honolulu clothing maker. The founder, Mort Feldman, and partners Mitsue Aka and Janice Moody named the company after daughter Victoria Moody and son Richard Feldman. They began by making women’s resort clothing and in 1969 added men’s Hawaiian style shirts.

In the 1960s Tori Richards became known for their use of engineered prints – prints specifically designed to fit a garment’s shape. The clothing was very fashion forward and was often featured in leading fashion magazines. By the late 1980s the company had all but abandoned its women’s wear, focusing on men’s Hawaiian shirts. They came very close to closing, but the Feldman family was able to reestablish their position as a creator of imaginative prints. In 2000 they officially relaunched the women’s wear division.
